Tutorial classes were started in 1985 to help children from the weaker sections of society cope with school. Since dropout is maximal in the years after primary school, the classes are run for standards 3rd onward. At present, the classes are run in Jhagadia, and surrounding selected villages and around 250 students avail of this facility each year. The majority of the students are girls. Part time teachers are employed by SEWA-Rural. The Classes are very popular with students and parents alike and dropout has been virtually eliminated among those who enroll. The performance of the students in school is usually remarkably good. Extracurricular activities are encouraged.
Overall, the classes seem to help transform the average timid, diffident child into a confident one, capable of standing on his own.

Although education has been high on SRs agenda from the outset, it has so far been a low-profile activity for several reasons.
